Description |
L1 is an electric boxcab locomotive, built in 1915 for the London & Port Stanley Railway. It was primarily used to haul freight between London, St. Thomas, and Port Stanley, although in 1915 it did haul Pere Marquette and CP passenger coaches until the Interurban Motor Cars (including L&PS Car 14) arrived. L1 was built by General Electric in Erie, Pennsylvania, but was shipped to Peterborough, Ontario to have builder's plates installed, thus qualifying it as "Canadian built" to avoid import tarrifs. L1 was the first of three similar locomotives supplied to the L&PS; L2 is currently privately owned and L3 has since been scrapped. Each locomotive was equipped with multiple unit control and were powered by four GE 245 HP motors. L1 was retired in 1966 and donated to the National Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa in 1967. In 1995 it was transferred to the ECRM, where the exterior has been restored. |
