Description |
During the Second World War the need arose to transport thousands of soldiers across the United States. The US Office of Defense Transportation filled this need by contracting the Pullman Car Company to build 2400 Troop Sleepers. They were equipped with 10 sets of triple bunk-beds, and slept 29 servicemen and 1 porter. After the war they were sold off to different railways and converted into various uses. Number 8367, built in 1944, was purchased by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway and converted into a baggage car. In 1981 C&O removed it from passenger service and placed it into Maintenance of Way service in Southern Ontario. Renumbered several times over the years, its last active service number was #901176. The car was used for storage in Blenhiem, Ontario, at the end of its railway life, until aquired by the ECRM from CSX, the successor to C&O. After two and a half years of restoration 8367 was returned to its original appearance externally and had seats installed internally for use as a coach during Museum events. |
