Description |
This caboose was completed on 15 February 1891 in Port Huron, Michigan for the Grand Trunk Railway. Initially numbered #90724, it is one of the few to survive with its original arch bar trucks because the Grand Trunk Railway replaced the trucks on many of their cabooses in the 1950s. It was rebuilt in 1924 and became the Grand Trunk Western #77137 in June 1925. It was originally painted mineral brown, but in June of 1944 Grand Trunk and all its subsidiaries, including Grand Trunk Western, were absorbed into Canadian National Railways and the caboose was repainted to CN orange. The Maple Leaf logo was applied in 1954, and in 1957 th lettering was changed from black to white. The cupola on top of the caboose was lowered at one time to allow passage through the original St. Clair Tunnel between Sarnia and Port Huron, during London to Chicago service. The caboose was privately owned and restored prior to its donation to the ECRM in 1998. |
