Description |
This diesel-electric locomotive is an example of one of the most common and iconic North American locomotive designs, the "F series." #9171 was built in 1948 as an F3A model locomotive by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division in LaGrange, Illinois. It then worked for the Grand Trunk Western Railroad as #9013 in Michigan, Indiana, and northern Illinois. GTW retired the locomotive in 1972, and it was then transferred to Canadian National and rebuilt into an F7Au class one year later. In 1989 #9171 was retired for a second and final time by CN. It remains painted in CN red, white, and black. Afterward retirement, it was stored at several sites, including the John Street Roundhouse Museum in Toronto and the Canadian Railway Museum in Delson, Quebec. In 2008 the Canadian Railroad Historical Association declared 9171 surplus and sold it to the ECRM for $1.00. 9171 was then moved to St. Thomas in 2009. |
