Description |
Wabash #51 is a 43-ton diesel-electric switching locomotive, built by General Electric in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1939. It was the first diesel-electric locomotive in St. Thomas, where it worked in the north yard from 1939 to 1961. Workers nicknamed the locomotive "Tillie" after the cartoon character "Tillie the Toiler." In 1961 it was sold to Andrew Merrilees Limited, who leased it to several companies until 1967 when it was sold to the Atlas Steel Company of Quebec where it worked until 1994. The ECRM then purchased Tillie and had it restored to its black-and-yellow Wabash colours. Tillie is the only operational locomotive in the ECRM's collection. |
